The most commonly performed bariatric (weight loss) surgery in the United States, gastric bypass surgery is a proven procedure for helping individuals with a high body mass index (BMI) lose significant weight. On average, patients lose 70% of their excess weight with gastric bypass surgery (according to a study cited in Obesity Coverage).
What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (also referred to simply as “gastric bypass”) is a weight loss procedure with both restrictive and malabsorptive properties. During the procedure, which is done through a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) approach, Dr. Mithani divides the stomach into two. The new stomach is a small “pouch” – approximately the size of a large egg – that holds just a couple ounces. This is the restrictive property of the procedure – that is to say, the amount of food you are able to eat is restricted.
Next, Dr. Mithani divides the small intestine, reconnecting the bottom portion of the small intestine to the new stomach pouch. This is the malabsorptive property of the procedure. Food bypasses a portion of the small intestine (where nutrients and calories are absorbed), and enters the small intestine further down the digestive tract. As a result, fewer calories are absorbed.
Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Right for Me?
In order to be considered a candidate for gastric bypass surgery, patients must have a BMI of at least 35. However, only a physician can determine if a patient is right for weight loss surgery. To learn more, schedule your consultation with Dr. Mithani, a fellowship-trained weight loss surgeon in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area.
What Results Can I Expect?
According to Bariatric Surgery Source, “the average gastric bypass patient loses between 65% and 75% of their excess weight within two years and has kept most of the weight off after five years.”
