Microneedling In Southeast Texas

Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a non-surgical technique used to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself. Microneedling may be performed on its own or by also incorporating platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Learn more below about this innovative technique, commonly used for treating acne scars and rejuvenating aging skin.
Fast Facts About Microneedling
- Microneedling is a dermaroller procedure. The dermaroller device pricks the skin with very small needles in order to promote the growth of new collagen and skin tissue.
- Dermarollers are sold direct to consumer in many stores and online. However, commercially available dermarollers do not offer anywhere near the same degree of abrasion or results.
- At Mithani MD, we use the only class II, FDA-approved microneedling device on the market. This device is for physician use only.
- Microneedling should only be performed by a trained medical professional licensed to do so. Requirements vary from state to state.
- At Mithani MD, all microneedling procedures are performed by a board-certified physician.
- Microneedling is a popular technique for assisting the body in repairing itself; it is commonly used for rejuvenating skin affected by acne and natural aging, though other applications may also be valid.
What Is Microneedling?
At Mithani MD, we use a device called the SkinPen to perform microneedling procedures. The SkinPen is the first and only class II microneedling device approved by the FDA. This is a medical grade device designed exclusively for use by healthcare professionals.
The SkinPen is used to produce micro-injuries on the skin. These controlled “injuries” stimulate the release of cytokines and growth factors, which the body uses to repair itself. These dermal abrasions result in new skin tissues, which refresh the appearance.
Microneedling with PRP
Similar to the microneedling process described above, this service integrates platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP is a therapy used in aesthetics, sports medicine, orthopedics, and other fields of medicine. In using PRP, a provider takes a small blood sample from the patient. The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. This platelet-rich plasma contains growth factors; the patient’s own PRP is then injected directly into the targeted treatment areas to promote tissue regeneration.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is a technique for stimulating the body to produce new, healthy collagen. This is something that the body does naturally on its own after an injury. If you’ve ever skinned your elbow and observed the bright red skin that’s present just before a full recovery, then you’ve seen the power of collagen at work!
Microneedling causes “injury” or “trauma” to the skin, which then prompts the body to produce new collagen-rich tissue. Because an entire treatment area undergoes the same “injury” and growth simultaneously, the new skin is more balanced in tone and texture. This is one reason why microneedling can be so effective as a treatment for skin scarred by acne, surgery, or other causes.
What Is Microneedling Used For?
Patients with the following conditions may see improvements with microneedling:
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Other scars (new or old)
- Hyperpigmentation
- Stretch marks
- Fine lines or wrinkles
What Is the Microneedling Procedure Like?
Microneedling isn’t nearly as involved as more invasive cosmetic procedures, such as plastic surgery. The preparation, procedure, and recovery process is much easier on the body. Your doctor will provide you with all of the information you need to prepare for your microneedling procedure. Typically, this includes stopping the use of ibuprofen, acne medications, and other drugs. Let your doctor know about all the medications you use – including topical medications, which can cause certain side effects after microneedling.
Approximately one hour before treatment, you will be given a topical anesthetic to help manage pain. During the procedure, which may take approximately a half hour, your physician will use the SkinPen device to make small pricks just beneath the surface of the skin. These pricks are so small you won’t even notice them. The device is moved evenly across the treatment area to ensure that the skin will rejuvenate evenly during the recovery process and the weeks that follow. Immediately following treatment, your provider may use a serum or some other topical treatment to calm the irritated skin.
Candidacy, Risks & Side Effects of Microneedling
Microneedling is a very safe medical procedure that is commonly used among many healthy people with few or no adverse side effects. You may not be a safe candidate for microneedling if you…
- Are pregnant
- Are taking certain acne medications
- Have been diagnosed with psoriasis, eczema or some other skin conditions
- Have an open wound
- Have a history of skin scars
- Have recently undergone radiation therapy
For most people, microneedling is a safe and popular option for rejuvenating skin tissues through a minimally invasive approach!
Common side effects include minor redness and irritation in the days following the procedure. If you experience any of the following more severe side effects, call your doctor:
- Bruising
- Bleeding
- Peeling skin
- Infection
After a microneedling procedure, avoid sunlight; wear sunscreen if avoiding exposure is not possible. Many people begin to see results as early as just a couple weeks after microneedling. Multiple sessions are typically necessary for achieving optimal results. Your provider may also recommend complimentary skin care therapies, such as BOTOX® to smooth lines or JUVEDERM® to provide fullness to the skin.
